Mission of the Role
This will be a 2027 Summer Internship working out of our Canton, MA office.
As a Software Engineer Co-op / Intern at SICK, you will work with an engineering mentor and a collaborative team to design, build, test, and demonstrate a meaningful software solution. Your project may involve industrial sensor data, backend services, web applications, analytics, simulation, or automated testing across Windows and Linux environments. You will contribute through the team’s standard development workflow, receive feedback through technical discussions and code reviews, and gain practical experience with the software and hardware products SICK uses to solve real customer and business needs.
Key Responsibilities

- Collaborate with a manager, mentor, and engineering team to understand project goals, software requirements, system architecture, and relevant domain knowledge.
- Design, implement, test, and document a scoped software feature, application, or engineering tool for Windows and/or Linux environments.
- Develop or integrate backend services, user interfaces, data-processing components, databases, or test-automation solutions based on project needs.
- Write maintainable code and unit or integration tests; investigate defects using debugging tools, logs, and other available diagnostic information.
- Use Git-based development workflows, issue tracking, build tools, code reviews, and continuous integration and delivery practices.
- Participate in requirements discussions, technical design reviews, sprint planning, team demonstrations, and peer code reviews.
- Follow applicable software quality, security, data privacy, and responsible AI-assisted development practices; review and validate all generated or suggested code before use.
- Communicate progress, risks, questions, and results clearly and in a timely manner; seek guidance when needed and incorporate feedback.
- Learn about SICK’s business, products, customers, and departments through collaboration with engineers, other teams, and fellow interns.
- Present the completed project, technical decisions, results, and lessons learned at the close of the internship and provide feedback on the internship experience.
- Carry out other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned or required.
Key Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Data Science, or a related technical field.
- Foundational programming experience in at least one language such as Java, Python, C++, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
- Understanding of data structures, object-oriented programming, debugging, and basic software development principles.
- Familiarity with Git or another version-control system.
- Ability to communicate technical ideas, work collaboratively, accept feedback, and learn unfamiliar technologies.
- Evidence of practical coding experience through coursework, personal projects, hackathons, research, open-source contributions, or prior work experience.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and the ability to review, test, and validate AI-generated code.
- Preferred: Exposure to Java/Spring Boot, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, or another framework relevant to the assigned project.
- Preferred: Familiarity with REST APIs, SQL, databases (relational, NoSQL, timeseries, vector), JSON, or XML.
- Preferred: Exposure to automated testing, CI/CD, Docker, Windows, Linux, or a cloud platform.
- Preferred: Interest in industrial automation, sensor data, analytics, computer vision, simulation, distributed systems, or IoT.
Compensation
The base salary is one part of our Total Rewards package and is determined within a range. The starting base salary range for this position is listed below; the actual starting salary will be based on a variety of factors including experience, skill set, education, performance, licenses/certifications, business needs and other job-related factors, as permitted by law.
- Starting Base Annual Salary Range: $26 - $36 per hour
